DECATUR, TENNESSEE - The first Confederate flag will fly at the Meigs County Courthouse on June 3 each year as the result of action taken recently by the Meigs County Commission.
At their meeting last Thursday, commissioners approved the request of the Sons of Confederate Veterans to allow that date to be observed as Confederate Memorial Day and allow the first Confederate flag to fly at the courthouse on June 3 each year.
The request had been brought to the Commission in May by Ron Tharpe, Jamey McKenzie and Tony Hobbs, who represent the Meigs County Sons of Confederate Veterans Patrick R. Cleborne Chapter, Camp 811.
Tharpe presented a copy of the Tennessee Blue Book for 1999-2000 that named the state's legal holidays, plus the days of special observance which include Confederate Memorial Day on June 3.
"We want permission to fly the first national flag of the Confederacy on June 3rd of each year," Tharpe said at the May meeting.
The motion to recognize Confederate Memorial Day in Meigs County was approved in a 10-1 vote last Thursday with Commissioner Jodie Brantley voting against the motion.
